"Hickory Dickory Broc" - PEI Burger Love - 2018 - Part 3

The one and only downfall about going on vacation in April is that you end up missing part of PEI Burger Love. Being away for 2 weeks meant having to play catch-up to try and get in several burgers over the home stretch before months end.

So after arriving home late Friday afternoon we knew our supper plans would include a burger. Since we had to go back to Charlottetown in the evening for the PEI Roadrunners banquet we decided to stop in at O'Shea's Pub in Kinkora to try out the "Hickory Dickory Broc". We've been a fan of this pub for several years and the burgers that Richie and his crew put together each year always end up near the top of our list.

This years creation is no exception. The burger consisted of: 6 oz Island Beef Patty, Shredded Blend Cheese, Maple Bacon, O'Shea's Signature Sauce, Onion Tanglers, Hickory Sticks, Lettuce, Tomato on a Grilled Brioche Classic Bun, topped with a Broccoli, Cheese, and Bacon Wedge.

If you've been following along since I started writing these reviews you know that I like the 3 B's, BBQ and bacon. OShea's signature Jack Daniels BBQ sauce and maple bacon certainly set this one apart and the crunch from the onion tanglers and hickory sticks make this one a bit unique. Plus even if you hate broccoli you'll love the topper since it's deep fried with cheese and bacon. If you are looking for a burger to try out in Prince county before the end of the month this one is certainly worth the trip. I might just head out to trivia Friday night and have it again.

"Mr. Irresisti-Bull" - PEI Burger Love - 2018 - Part 2

Being away with the Western Capitals this past weekend and vacation only a couple of days away I'm trying to fit in a few burgers before we leave. Today I walked off the bus at the rink, hopped in the car and headed to try out the "Mr. Irresisti-Bull" from Holy Cow. The restaurant is in Morell, PE, about an hour away, but they also have a food truck and decided to send the truck to the western end of the Island over the course of the month. So today it was set up only 10 minutes from home.

I'm really glad they decided to do this. The burger consists of: 8 oz Sweet BBQ-glazed Island Beef Patty, Sweet Onion Marmalade, Housemade Potato Chips, Crispy Bacon, Gouda, Beefsteak Tomato, Greenleaf Lettuce, Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise, Pickle Slices on a Toasted Black and White Sesame Seed Bun, topped with a Bacon-wrapped, Cheese-stuffed Wonton and Cherry Tomato.

I've had their burgers the past couple of years and they always rank near the top of the heap and this one is no exception. The mix of sweet from the BBQ glaze and marmalade mixed well with the tang of the garlic mayo. The burger itself was cooked to perfection and the bacon wrapped cheese wonton was a nice topper.

If you are in the Morell area or have a chance to get to their food truck I would highly recommend trying out this burger. The Holy Cow knows how to cook a great burger and this years creation is worth a try.

"The Outlaw" - PEI Burger Love 2017 - Part 12

Stop #12 of the 2017 Burger Love tour.

The second stop of the day was the Holy Cow in Morell, a small community about half and hour east of Charlottetown.

"The Outlaw" was made of 8 oz Island Beef Patty, house-made Smoky BBQ Glaze, Arugula, house-made Poppyseed Mayo, Hothouse Tomato, Dill Pickle, Mozzarella, Cheddar, Onion Rings, Maple-Glazed Bacon, house-made BBQ Ranch Sauce on a toasted Potato Onion Bun topped with a Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Popper, Cherry Tomato and Dill Pickle.

As a fan of BBQ, I liked this one. I really liked the smokey flavour of the burger and the maple bacon was plentiful and delicious.

Although we set out with great intentions at the start of the day, planning to have 3 or 4 burgers, we ended up having to tap out after this one. A little disappointing at the time, but likely the right choice.

"PiggyBack" - PEI Burger Love - 2017 - Part 11

Stop #11 of the 2017 Burger Love tour.

As we've done the past couple of years, my wife and I spend the last Saturday of PEI Burger Love doing a little tour, one last chance to try a few burgers. We always set out on this day with great intentions and a list of "several" we want to try but even though we split the burgers and don't order any sides we are usually pretty full after a couple. With that in mind, we try to make sure that the first two are ones we really don't want to miss and go from there.

We both wanted to try the "PiggyBack" from Gahan House so we decided to start there. Their burger consisted of 7 oz Island Beef Patty, Aged White Cheddar, Bacon, Crispy Onions, Sweet Sriracha Slaw, Granny Smith Apple Chutney on a lightly grilled Iron Bridge Brown Molasses Bun topped with a Molasses Bun & Maple Stout Pulled Pork Slider and a Gherkin.

I'm glad we started with this one. The sweetness of the apple chutney and the molasses added balance and a great flavour to the burger. The pork slider on top was a nice bonus. I put this one right at the top of the list with O'Shea's "Wingin It" as my favourite for this year.

"Wingin It" - PEI Burger Love 2017 - Part 10

Stop #10 of the 2017 Burger Love tour.

O'Shea's Pub is a great little pub in the small community of Kinkora about 15 minutes from our house. Although we don't get there as often as we'd like it's always a great time and Richie and the staff always make us feel like family when we are there.

Last years Spud's McWhiskey and the Shea-Nanigan in 2015 were one of our favourites each year so we figured this one would be good too and we weren't disappointed.

Richie and the crew knocked it out of the park again this year. The "Wingin It" had 7 oz Island Beef Patty, O'Shea's Signature Sauce, Savoury Onion Fritter, 2-year Aged White Cheddar, Bacon, seasoned Sauteed Onions, Lettuce, Tomato, seasoned Lattice Fries on a toasted Brioche Bun topped with a Salt & Pepper Chicken Wing.

"Beauty-n-the-Beef" - PEI Burger Love 2017 - Part 9

Stop #9 of the 2017 Burger Love tour.

So after a couple of weeks away from little 'ol PEI it was time to get back into some burger love action.

It was a friends birthday this past Wednesday (26th), and another friend does trivia at a pub near their house so it was an easy decision to check out "Beauty-n-the-Beef" at Friends & Family in Kensington.

Their burger was made up of a 6 oz Island Beef Patty with Pepsi-Glaze, Roasted Garlic Cream Cheese & Caramelized Onion Spread, Arugula, Dill Pickle Slices, Apple Matchsticks, Havarti, house-made Bacon Jam, Roasted Red Peppers on a toasted Garlic Buttered Brioche Bun topped with Apple Petal & Cherry Tomato with Pickle Leaf.

A really good burger, even without bacon on it! The flavours really melded together well and the apple matchsticks added a nice sweetness to each bite.

Only a few days left and so many burgers.  Hope to be able to sample a few more before the end of the month.

"Pickled & Cured" - PEI Burger Love 2017 - Part 7

Stop #7 of the 2017 Burger Love tour.

Open Eats is one of our favourite spots to dine in Summerside, it's a quaint, smaller venue but the food it unique and always top-notch. We don't get there as often as we like but when we are looking for a nice evening out and a special meal, we always choose Open Eats.

Their entry this year is the "Pickled & Cured" and after reading executive chef Megan Beairsto's bio on their website you won't be overly surprised by the "pickled" part. The burger consisted of Custom Smoked & Cured 6 oz Island Beef Patty infused with Ground Bacon and Umami Ketchup Glaze, Sauerkraut, Cabbage & Onion Slaw, grated Gouda, Horseradish, Green Tomato Chow on a warmed house-made Seaweed Bun topped with a Pickled Brussel Sprout.

If you've been following my reviews over the past couple of years you know that I'm not a fan of anything pickled (sorry Megan) but my wife is, so she was eating the burger this time while I ordered off the regular menu. The pasta I had was delicious, would definitely recommend as an option to anyone. I also tried a couple of bites of the burger, and if my pasta wasn't so good I would have been disappointed that I didn't order it too. The burger patty itself was easily the best one I've tried so far.

We also lucked out, Alex was "testing" his baking skills and asked if we wanted to try a Cod Pie he was working on. Based on all of our other experiences there we knew it would be good so we took him up on the offer. It looked similar to a calzone, but the pastry was like a pie crust, light and flaky. The pie was filled with flaked cod, mozzarella, tomato, and seasoning. It was so good and I really hope it gets added to the menu. I would order it in a heartbeat.

"Life on Mars" - PEI Burger Love 2017 - Part 4

Stop #4 of the 2017 PEI Burger Love tour.

I don't even know where to start with this one. It is definitely unique, but based on their previous creations it wasn't a surprise. We had no intentions of stopping at the Frosty Treat but when we were driving by it didn't take much convincing for us to pull the car in. Boy am I glad we did.

Such a crazy combination of ingredients, the Life on Mars included 5 oz Island Beef Patty, Bacon, Deep Fried Mars Bar, Caramel Sauce on Two Funnel Cakes and topped with a Sprinkle Vanilla Ice Cream Cone!! I know it sounds crazy but it works.

It's a tricky one to eat since the bun is funnel cake, yep cake! We had to use a fork and knife to deconstruct and eat it, but tried to get as many flavours with each bite as we could.  We all really, really liked this one.

The cake was nice a crispy on the outside and moist and full of flavour on the inside. The burger had that great, unique, dairy bar taste, plus the bacon (need I say more). Top it off with a deep fried mars bar drizzled in caramel sauce. Delicious.

Even if you don't try the burger, if you've never had a deep fried mars bar, I suggest stopping in and having one. So good.

It's early in the month but this burger takes the club house lead and suspect that it'll stay near the top of the list.

PEI Burger Love 2016 - All Over

Another successful Burger Love month in the books. This year I managed to sample 20 of the 73 burgers available. I know that seems like a lot (and it is), I justify it to myself by saying that most were shared with my wife and several were split 4 ways with friends.

All the stats are now in and for Burger Love 2016 there were a total of 163,170 burgers sold (145k last year), that's over $2.2 million in burger sales in just 30 days. The winner this year, based on fan voting, was the Brick-Inator from the Brickhouse.

Unfortunately I didn't get to try that one as the Brickhouse was basically fully booked for the last 2 weeks of the month, luckily with the win it will be on their menu for the rest of the year.

Here are my rankings, please take with a grain of salt. I like bacon, cheese and BBQ and not a big fan of "spice" so my rankings reflect my personal taste. Feel free to click on the burger name to read my review. I'd be interested to hear what your opinion is on some of these burgers.

Kensington Pit Stop - PEI Burger Love 2016 - Part 19 and 20

* Stop #19 and #20 of my 2016 Burger Love adventure.

The final week of Burger Love is always bitter sweet, so many great burgers and not near enough time.  Unless you are Dale Park, known as the "Queen of Burgers", she tries them all every year. That's 73 burgers this year.

It's a fun month to tour around with my wife and friends sampling the variety of burgers out there.

We decided to take a ride out to Kensington and check two off our list, The Home Place and Island Stone Pub.

First stop was the Home Place for the "Apple Orchid" consisting of a 6oz Island Beef Patty, Horseradish Roasted Garlic Aioli, Maple Bacon Apple Chutney, Frizzled Onions, Applewood Cheddar Sauce, and Fresh Spinach on a Toasted Brioche Bun, garnished with a Caramel Apple Slice. We were expecting good things as their burger last year, "Cabbage Patch", was one of our favourites and won the 2015 Burger Love title.

Overall a pretty good burger, but I think we were spoiled by just how much we liked the burger last year and this one wasn't quite as good.

Rating 7.5/10

Thankfully eating only 1/2 a burger with no sides allows us to try a couple of burgers if we desire so we decided to move on to the Island Stone Pub for the "Sunday Roast". Their burger was made of 2 - 4oz Seasoned Island Beef Patties, Homemade Whipped Horseradish Cheese Sauce, Homemade Cabbage Slaw, and Homemade Carrot Ketchup on a Toasted and Buttered Potato Scallion Roll, topped with a Sticky Date Pudding Bite.

The pub in the old train station and is a great little spot, especially in the summer when they have a full patio outside right next to the Confederation Trail.

We'd heard good things about this one but I was a little apprehensive since most of the ingredients didn't resonate with me but boy was I wrong. It was a very tasty burger and the combination of flavours went very well together, plus the atmosphere there is great.

"Spud's McWhiskey" - PEI Burger Love 2016 - Part 14

* Stop #14 of my 2016 Burger Love adventure.

O'Shea's in Kinkora is a spot where we attend trivia on a regular basis. Last year Richie had created one of our favourite burgers overall so it was one we definitely wanted to try. It's a great pub about 15 minutes east of Summerside, PEI. The staff are great and we always enjoy spending an evening hanging out there.

"Spud's McWhiskey" was composed of a 7oz Island Beef Patty and Parmesan Potato Gratin with Jameson Irish Whiskey Glaze, Maple Bacon, Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded Blend Cheese, Onion Tanglers, Romaine Lettuce, and Tomato on a Brioche Bun grilled with Butter, garnished with a Breaded Pickle Spear.

It didn't disappoint, this year burger garners a spot near the top of the leaderboard yet again. The burger was seasoned and cooked very well and had a great taste on it's own. I really liked the flavour of the potato patty whiskey glaze and maple bacon.

If your looking to try a burger in the Summerside area I'd highly recommend taking the short drive to O'Shea's to try Spud's McWhiskey.

We stayed for trivia and took home 2nd place, always nice to win free beer!!

"Triple S" - PEI Burger Love 2016 - Part 6

* Stop #6 of my 2016 Burger Love adventure.

What would a Sunday afternoon in April be without some PEI Burger Love? Today's stop was the Family and Friends Restaurant in Kensington.

Their burger, "Triple S" (sweet, smokey, spicy), consisted of a 6oz Island Beef Patty, Smoky Blueberry Root Beer BBQ Sauce, Chipotle Crunchy Mustard, Frisee & Arugula Lettuce, Smoked Bacon, Onion & Red Pepper Gouda, Strawberry Slices, Dill Pickle, Tomato, and Caramelized Onion on a Pretzel Bun, garnished with Strawberry and Pickle Slice.

We had circled this one as one we wanted to try as soon as the list came out as we both love strawberries and wanted to see how the combination would play out. At first bite we were certainly glad we did.

The Triple S flavours went very well together and the pretzel bun (my favourite) was an added bonus. Really liked the smokey BBQ sauce combined with the sweetness of the strawberries. The burger was seasoned well and cooked to perfection.

This one was definitely one of our favourites so far.

"Seoul Mate" - PEI Burger Love 2016 - Part 5

* Stop #5 of my 2016 Burger Love adventure.

We decided to take the trek west on Friday night to try out the "Seoul Mate" at The Landing in Tyne Valley.

It's a great little pub set in the heart of the tiny village, great spot for a meal or to hang out with friends over a pint and listen to some live music on the weekend.

The Seoul Mate consisted of a 6oz Island Beef Patty, Bacon, Old White Cheddar, Grilled House-made Kimchi, Spicy Korean Aioli, Arugula, Korean BBQ Sauce, and Crunchy Asian Noodles on a Poppy & Sesame Seed Bun, garnished with Tomato and Carrot Stick.

Wasn't sure what to expect going in with the fusion of different flavours that I hadn't had before but with all the burgers I go in with an open mind. Plus when I see the word "spicy" I get a little nervous since I'm not a big fan of hot/spicy foods. This one did have a pretty good amount of heat, but it wasn't overwhelming.

If you like a burger with a little kick this one is likely for you.

"5 O'Clock Somewhere" - PEI Burger Love 2016 - Part 2

* Stop #2 of my 2016 Burger Love adventure.

My next stop was the "5 O'Clock Somewhere" at The Lobster House in Summerside.

7oz Island Beef Patty, Merlot Tomato Compote, Beer Battered Bacon, Goat Cheese, Port Caramelized Onions, Whiskey BBQ Sauce, Bourbon Apple Fennel Slaw, and Tequila Citrus Aioli on a Brioche Bun, garnished with Sweet Pickled Onion Gherkin Parasol.

This one set the bar pretty high, with deep fried beer battered bacon how could it not. Not usually a fan of goat cheese but there was only a little bit so wasn't overpowering. The whiskey BBQ sauce and the bourbon fennel slaw added a nice sweetness to the flavour.

My only (small) issue was that having the slaw under the burger made the bottom bun a little soggy, but overall a delicious burger and easily the clubhouse leader after 2 stops.

As we were leaving we suggested that after Burger Love that the Deep Fried Beer Battered Bacon should be an appetizer on its own, I'm sure we weren't the only ones suggesting it. So good, just on their own. Heard yesterday that this has already happened!! Will be back for an order of those for sure.

"BBQ Beer Burger" - PEI Burger Love 2016 - Part 1

* Stop #1 of my 2016 Burger Love adventure.

My first burger this year was the "BBQ Beer Burger" at The Loyalist Inn in Summerside.

6oz Island Beef Patty, BBQ Sauce, Boston Lettuce, Fresh Tomato, White Cheddar, Maple Crunch Bacon, Dill Pickle Slice, and Homemade Battered Fried Onion on a Homemade Potato and Onion Bun toasted with Butter.

It was a good burger but there was nothing that made it standout. I could see it as their regular menu burger, I didn't find anything that made it "special".

PEI Burger Love - 2016

Along with the melting snow, people on PEI have an extra special reason to celebrate the month of April.

Since 2011 we've enjoyed the phenomenon known as "PEI Burger Love". What started as a quest from a local marketing company to find PEI's best burger has evolved into a multi-million dollar influx to the Island economy.

In the first year 14 restaurants participated and 5500 burgers were sold. Last year 60 restaurants sold over 145 000 burgers. This year there are 73 different burgers to try.

Last year I wrote a little bit about the different burgers I tried and will be doing the same this year.

Feel free to follow my 2016 Burger Love quest here and on twitter or checkout #PEIBurgerLove.

"Shea-Nanigan" - PEI Burger Love - Part 10

* Stop #10 of my Burger Love adventure.

A friend of mine does trivia at O'Shea's Pub in Kinkora (Senators coach Cameron's home town) and we try to attend when we can. He had raved about the burger so we decided to head out early before trivia started to give it a try.

The make-up of the "Shea-Nanigan" was 7ozs. Island beef, mozza & cheddar cheese, grilled maple ham, onion rings, spicy lattice fry, signature Jack Daniel's™ sauce, fresh tomato, and romaine lettuce on a grilled and buttered cornmeal kaiser, garnished with a mac & cheese wedge.

Richie and the staff knocked it out of the park with this one, it was really, really good. The maple ham rivaled the candied bacon on the Sugar Daddy and the Jack Daniel's sauce added a little bit of sweetness. Topped off with a couple of onion rings and lattice fries for a little crunch.

Normally my wife and I split a burger between us but since it was trivia night she shared one with one of our team mates so this one was all mine. In all honesty, I would have been disappointed if I had to share this one.

After 10 burgers this one is near the top of the pack.

"Let it Ride" - PEI Burger Love - Part 9

* Stop #9 of my Burger Love adventure.

My normal Friday lunch spot, West End Bar and Grill, had an entry this year so it was a given that I would be trying it.

The "Let It Ride" was a 6oz. Island beef patty, bacon & sweet onion jam, 2 year aged cheddar, rustic tomato chutney, green leaf lettuce, spiced parmesan crisp, and black pepper mayo on a warm butter toasted pretzel bun.

I'm a fan of the pretzel bun so this one had an advantage from the get go and this one didn't do anything to change my opinion of them, it was very good. The burger was well cooked and juicy. I liked the parmesan crisp and all of the flavours went well together. With both sweet onion jam and the tomato chutney this one was a little messy to eat but if you were careful you could minimize loosing any out the sides.

Overall a very tasty burger.

Rating - 8/10

"Let It Ride" - West End Bar & Grill

"B2 Beachcomber" - PEI Burger Love - Part 8

* Stop #8 of my Burger Love adventure.

Next up was a stop at Brother's Two restaurant in Summerside.

The B2 "Beachcomber" consisted of a 6oz. Island Beef patty with B2 Spices, breaded PEI clams dusted with cajun seasoning, homemade tartar sauce, homemade lemon aioli, fried brie cheese, caramelized onions, arugula, and grape tomatoes on a homemade B2 bun with garlic butter & sea salt, topped with fresh lemon.

Although I normally don't eat much seafood I decided to give this one a try since we wanted to have all of the different burgers in Summerside. As I mentioned in my original Burger Love post, I'm a little fussy, tartar sauce isn't something I enjoy so I didn't have great expectations going in.

My favourite part of the burger was surprisingly the clams, I just wish there would have been more than a couple. The breading was light but very tasty. I think I would have really enjoyed having an order of them on their own, which I might have to do next time. Unfortunately, for the rest, I found the tartar sauce a bit overwhelming, likely because I'm not a big fan, and seemed to take away from any flavour the burger might have had.

"The Cabbage Patch" - PEI Burger Love - Part 7

* Stop #7 of my Burger Love adventure.

Our next stop on the Burger Love tour took us to "The Home Place" in Kensington.

The "Cabbage Patch" consisted of 6oz. Island beef charbroiled, homemade barbonaise sauce, romaine lettuce, homemade cream cheese pesto, grilled pear slices, beer braised red cabbage with bacon and red onions, and kettle chips on a grilled onion bun, garnished with dill & cherry tomato.

All kinds of sensations for the taste buds with this one. An assortment of flavours that have you enjoying this burger right to the last bite. The slight tartness of the beer braised cabbage is offset nicely by the sweetness of the grilled pear and barbonaise sauce.

The burger was cooked to perfection and the addition of crisp bacon and kettle chips added a bit of crunch. I suspect the "Cabbage Patch" will be among the contenders for the title at the end of the month.
